Enrolments in the Postgraduate Certificate in Plant Biosecurity are now open for 2012.

At the moment enrolments in the postgrad Diploma and the Masters remain closed whilst we make some alterations to these courses. However please note that you can commence in the Certificate and progress to the Diploma and/or Masters, as the first semesters of the three courses are all identical. Direct enrolment into the Diploma and Masters should be open soon.

If you wish to take a single unit that is offered by the Plant Biosecurity Program, rather than enrol in a whole degree, you can!To enrol in one unit only, you must apply directly to the University that teaches that unit. If you are enrolled in a postgraduate course elsewhere you can apply for a ‘cross-institutional enrolment‘ in the unit you are interested in. If you are not enrolled anywhere else but wish to take the unit for your own interest or for professional development, you should apply as a ‘not for award‘ student. In both cases you will receive a grade on completion of the unit. Remember you must apply directly to the University that teaches the unit that you are interested in. This applies to people taking single units only.

You can apply to enrol at Murdoch University online: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/Future-students/Domestic-students/Applying-to-Murdoch/Applying-online/

Once enrolled you can select the unit(s) you wish to take during the semester. The fees for 2012 are $2600 per unit for domestic students. The course is delivered 100% online.

Please note that Queensland University of Technology is no longer enrolling or teaching units in this course.

Please note that enrolments will close 31 January 2012.

If you have any questions regarding the courses please do not hesitate to contact Dr Kirsty Bayliss.

Plant biosecurity is a growing field of activity for many professionals involved in agriculture, horticulture, the environment and international and domestic trade. This growth is driven by the need to maintain agricultural and environmental integrity in a world where, due to ever increasing levels of trade and human movement, exotic plant-affecting organisms pose major and ongoing threats. Plant biosecurity is a continuum covering preborder, border and post-border activities and is underpinned by:

plant pathology,

entomology,

weed biology,

risk analysis,

community engagement,

emergency response planning,

invasion biology,

legislation,

and quarantine processes.

The ability to respond in an appropriate and timely fashion to plant pest or disease incursions is essential to protect our valuable agricultural and horticultural plant industries and our natural ecosystems. In this course you will cover all aspects of plant biosecurity, from pre-border preparedness and prevention activities, to rapid emergency response in the event of a plant pest incursion, and then the management of pest organisms if they permanently establish and impact on trade.

This course is delivered by a consortium of five Australian universities, each with expertise in different areas of plant biosecurity, thus increasing your learning and professional experience.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to pursue careers in biosecurity, quarantine and pest management, acting in technical, research and administrative
roles, with organisations such as Departments of Agriculture, Biosecurity Agencies, Trade Organisations and private industry.

Professional Recognition

These courses have been developed within the Australian Qualifications Framework in consultation with various government agencies. When you graduate from the program you can do so with the knowledge that your degree will be at the highest level of industry recognition.

Interested? Contact a course coordinator and enrol today!

Almost 2400 years ago the great Greek philosopher Plato founded the world’s first academic institution at Akademia, a sanctuary near Athens dedicated to the goddess of wisdom. Students and scholars travelled there from all over Greece and beyond to exchange ideas, to argue and to explore the great questions of their time.

That quest, and those questions, are just as important 25 centuries later; and to address them five of Australia’s leading universities have created a new, open approach that goes beyond the bounds of any single institution.

The Plant Biosecurity Program is a super-graduates school that provides a bigger and more powerful forum for learning, research and creativity than anything Australia has seen before.

This program is your forum…and your opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of our plant (agricultural, built and natural) security, our stewardship of the environment and our knowledge of the planet.

The Weblog will keep you informed of information and events relating in general to the Plant Biosecurity Program. And the Forums is a space for you – the students, so no matter which units you are enrolled in, can interact with each other, all of the academics and other invited people.
